Do you obsess about sex on a regular basis? Do you spend hours watching pornography or seeking out sexual encounters to satisfy a craving? Have you experienced feelings of guilt or shame from acting on your sexual cravings?

In a world that seems to be so focused on sex, it is sometimes difficult to know when we cross the line into addiction. But the fact is, sex addiction is a very real behavioural disorder that affects many people – and making it virtually impossible for them to sustain healthy, meaningful relationships. The good news is that there is help. Quality treatment is available and you can be freed from your addiction and have a healthy sex life and fulfilling relationships once again.

What is Sex Addiction?

Sex addiction is a behavioural addiction – also known as a process addiction – characterised by compulsive sexual acts and/or thoughts. Just as with substance addiction, sex addiction is caused by a malfunction in the brain’s reward system. Sex addiction is challenging to combat because unlike substance addiction, sex is not something that can be realistically abstained from, in most cases. Sex addiction can be difficult for individuals to identify in themselves, as natural sexual proclivity varies from person to person. But, the defining feature of sex addiction is the negative consequences associated with the behaviour. Sex addicts suffer many consequences including disruptions to their family, work life and their sense of personal identity. It often causes extreme feelings of guilt and shame, which can lead to depression as well as isolation from others. Sex addiction is a progressive disorder, meaning, over time, it tends to get worse. It is important to seek help to avoid more serious consequences.

Various Types of Sex Addiction

There are many types of sex addiction. Sex addicts are most likely to fall into one or more of the following 10 categories:

  • Fantasy sex: A preoccupation with thoughts and desires for acting out sexual fantasies that replaces genuine sexual feelings
  • Seductive role sex: Treating sexual partners as conquests to be won through charm/manipulation, giving one a sense of power
  • Voyeuristic sex: Obsessing over, or engaging in watching others engage in intercourse; isolating yourself in order to masturbate as often as possible—even to the point of injury
  • Exhibitionist sex: Being aroused and preoccupied by exposing certain sexual parts of the body to others in public, or engaging in sex in view of others
  • Paying for sex: Preferring to pay people for sex as a way to avoid genuine connection
  • Trading sex: Using sex as a commodity by which you trade goods or services in exchange for sex – thereby avoiding intimacy or connection
  • Intrusive sex: Being or getting aroused by touching others without their consent. This especially applies to people who use their position of power to gain sexual access
  • Anonymous sex: Compulsively engaging in sexual acts with strangers
  • Pain exchange sex: Being preoccupied with sexual thoughts or desires to cause pain or humiliation to another person or receiving it yourself
  • Exploitive sex: Obsessing over or engaging in sex against someone’s will. Examples include rape or pedophilia

The Consequences of Sex Addiction

If left untreated, sex addiction can have many detrimental effects on a person’s life, and can often lead to the following consequences:

  • Strained or destroyed relationships
  • Higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection
  • Lack of enjoyment in life and further isolation from others
  • Tendency to develop more addictions
    (eg. drugs, alcohol or gambling)
  • Loss of interest in work, school, hobbies etc.
  • Profound feelings of shame, guilt, hopelessness and depression
  • Financial troubles
  • Imprisonment

Overall, sex addiction can destroy lives on many levels. It is also nearly impossible to stop on your own, because complete abstinence is not realistic, for most people. Additionally, triggers are often unavoidable as we are constantly surrounded by images and messages of sex. Without professional treatment, sex addiction is incredibly difficult to defeat.

What Are the Treatment Options for Sex Addiction?

Fortunately, there are treatments available that are both effective and confidential. The two main treatment options for sex addiction are outpatient services and inpatient treatment centres. Outpatient treatment allows the client to continue their day-to-day activities while fitting therapy into their daily schedule. This type of treatment is a good option for those who are unable to take leave from personal commitments. On the other hand, Inpatient treatment is conducted at a residential rehab facility.

Inpatient clients are housed and treated simultaneously and as such have access to 24-hour care. Inpatient treatment is considered the ‘gold standard’ for addiction treatment for several reasons including:
  • The client is removed from triggers/negative influences
  • The client has complete immersion in recovery
  • There is no access to drugs or alcohol – and other problematic behaviours can be monitored and controlled
  • Around-the-clock support
